Corinne Bailey Rae’s “Been To The Moon” and She’s Back With a New Album

The last time music listeners heard from the soulful and angelic Corinne Bailey Rae, it was with the release of her then sophomore album The Sea in 2010.

The album came on the heels of the unexpected passing of Rae’s husband, so as you can imagine, it felt both beautiful and somber in places. The album showed the evolution of Rae from a free-spirited girl to a sexy siren who could captivate you with seductive lyrics and sensual falsettos like on the single “Closer”.

After the album was released, Rae vanished somewhat aside from releasing The Love EP in January 2011. From that EP, Rae won a Grammy for Best R&B Performance for her cover of Bob Marley & The Wailers “Is This Love”.

Now, after six years, Rae is back with a new album The Heart Speaks In Whispers, which will be released May 13th. From the album, Rae is giving fans a taste of what they can expect (hopefully) with the first single “Been To The Moon”. The song, which was written by Amber and Paris Strother of KING (who have an amazing album out now, by the way), speaks to going to the moon and back for a person who doesn’t realize it until it’s too late. The production on the track full of synthesizers, hypnotic horns and guitar, gives life and a stage for Rae’s delicate vocals.

The video for the single, which Corinne said via Facebook is her favorite video ever, brings the lyrics of the song to life perfectly. Rae takes the role of an astronaut who enters an unknown and uninhabited planet. She’s not sure where she is, but looks fierce, nonetheless, throughout the whole video – from the gold jumpsuit to the funky 70’s jumpsuit at the end.

Corinne’s new album enter stores May 13th and features collaborations with Moses Sumnney and Esperanza Spalding, to name a few. Given this single, I am confident the whole album will be great. I just hope she doesn’t take another six year hiatus to release her follow-up.
